Is HR Ready to Adopt Mobile Apps?

Smartphone_image.jpgWith the proliferation of mobile HR apps, the success of early HR adopters of mobile apps, and the push from tech savvy employees, the widespread adoption of HR-focused mobile apps appears to be close to or at the tipping point.  

With the explosive growth of mobile app usage, providing a mobile experience that delights its employees should be a critical HR initiative. However, many companies have yet to adopt a mobile app strategy. A Bersin survey conducted earlier this year revealed that only 19 percent of respondents currently use smartphone technology in their HR initiatives, with another 23 percent planning to in the next 12 months. So what about the other 58 percent? Will 2016 be the year that HR takes the plunge and broadly adopts mobile apps?

Several forces are in play that could create the right market conditions for widespread adoption of mobile HR apps.

  • According to a recent Bersin by Deloitte report, mobile is poised to become the primary HR technology platform of the future. With more than 2.1 billion smartphone users, mobile Internet growth of 69 percent in 2014, and 51 percent of Internet access being done via mobile phones, that prediction seems highly likely.
  • One of the biggest barriers to adoption — the belief that legacy or on premise systems will not support mobile — has been debunked. Legacy, on-premise HR solution providers and cloud-solution providers alike have created or are in the process of creating mobile apps of their own. And, with software, there is always a workaround.  
  • Earlier this year, Bersin released a case study on Commonwealth Bank of Australia as an example of an early adopter who is reaping the rewards of mobile technology. With their custom-built application called “Sidekick,” the company is able to manage all the aspects of the employment experience (from onboarding to the employee directory to pay and time-tracking). The application has been downloaded by more than 10,000 company employees and, in less than a year, has reduced requests for pay slips by 46 percent and time-approval requests from hourly employees by 35 percent. It has also given the HR team powerful new information on how to make employees’ work lives better.
